Hmm, it's an interesting situation to have the highlight getting in the way. Currently I think the only thing that would help is to edit your hotkeys.txt file to give a keyboard shortcut for the Hide Selection hotkey action. When active, nothing is rendered to denote the selection. This action doesn't have a hotkey by default because it could be extremely confusing if a user were to hit it on accident.
