I would suggest you to take already rigged characters and animate basic animations like jump, walk or run. And add them to your portfolio. Without any portfolio you will have to rely only on your luck.
Sometimes even nobody can surprise themselves how good they can animate 🙂 Just some people are very good at feeling the general motion.
So don't wait for opportunities, find yourself and improve.
