Fun Run 2

Hello,

Thought i'd share our project, which just released this weekend. We use spine for character animations, and it has allowed us to have a very scaleable system in terms of customization of characters. Its the first game i've worked on where i had a leading role, and i've been responsible for the graphical/animation aspects of the development, in addition to game design.

Fun Run 2 (iOS/Android) went straight up to 2. place in the overall category in the US, and has been trending worldwide on twitter the past few days. Rather overwhelming reception and a magical atmosphere at the office these days!

The game is free, so feel free to download it and give it a go.

Looking forward to explore the newer features of Spine in future updates & new games!

It looks nice! I played the original, when it was hovering at the top of the charts for many months XD

It does look at lot nicer than the first one, and even though I don't like gore, I think it will definitely appeal to a lot of people (people are always asking for zombies in my game).

Slightly off topic, but what did you use for the networking backend? For the first game it worked pretty smoothly, but you'd occasionally have someone jump in front/ behind you. They didn't have google play services multiplayer back then either so have always wondered (if you coded your own from scratch, used nates kryonet, or one of the various networking backends they have out there) 😃

Hey, thanks! In regards to our backend we use our own custom systems. In terms of gameserver performance, it should all be identical to the original Fun Run, with various improvements. Google play services are very limited if we wanna do custom things, databases, logic on the game server etc. 🙂

I was checking out the top free last night and it's already number 3 again (USA, top free game)!
Nice job! Do you guys pay for ads, or is that just all organic growth?

Does your method of monetization work well for you (no in game ads, but in app purchases for coin doubler- like jetpack joyride, and just buying customizations for characters)?

It is an addictive game, and I think the characters look a lot nicer than the first (but I bet some people probably complain because the old ones looked a little more stylized 😉 ), as well as some of the powerups/ weapons, levels, feedback on the top right in game, and match making. (the only negative I found was due to the hectic type gameplay- sometimes you just die and don't see why- and I didn't really get how the musket/gun worked compared to the other powerups)

Thanks! It's all organic growth yeah, extremely expensive to pay for the top charts, and in most cases not really worth it i believe. Our monetization model works well i'd say, we do have ads though - but only like once every 4th hour. We value the experience of the game, and dont wanna fill it with ads popping up. There is an option to watch video ads and recieve some coins though.

It was a challenge from a design perspective though, how true to the original should we keep it and such. We went on an improved most aspects, and avoided drastic changes. We do have a far better system set up though, so we can build and expand the game in new and exciting ways in future patches. Spine did wonders for us as well - earlier we had frame by frame animations for all characters, and seperate duplicated of said frames with every single item 😃
