Thanks for the help. I can see the tracks playing now in the preview view. I didn't realize that selecting the animation in the tracks 'set' it for that track.
Another question, does this work in Unity's animation editor (mecanim) or do you have to use c# to play the tracks?
Think I figured it out. I set a layer for each animation in the Mecanim layers thing, and had to the Weight to 1 for the stars and now it seems to work!
